Paris, the “City of Lights”

Paris, the “City of Lights”, is the world's most beloved tourist destination, drawing over 30 million visitors every year. The City of Romance's culture is legendary: spend a day at the Louvre, the world's most frequented art museum, visit the Eiffel Tower, stroll the banks of the River Seine in the evening's dusky warmth, take in the Notre-Dame Cathedral, experience the Ballet or attend an opera at one of Paris' two 19th-century opera houses. Stroll the Champs-Elysées in bloom, see the Napoleonic Wars' Arc de Triomphe and the Egyptian Obelisk, or visit the Place de la Concorde, where the guillotine once shook dynasties and drew crowds during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror.

An ancient city, Paris was occupied by the Romans for several hundred years, underwent its metamorphosis into cultural haven through the Renaissance and the reign of Charlemagne, and was barely spared invasion by the Germans in the First World War. Hemingway, Dali, Stravinsky and Picasso, among many other famed artists, called the city home between the wars. Paris, occupied by the Germans for four years during the Second World War, was finally liberated in 1944, two months after the invasion at Normandy; it stands as an enduring testament to the beauty and culture of Paris that, faced with an order from Hitler to destroy the city's monuments before their retreat, the retreating German general refused to do so.
